The difference between solar thermal and photovoltaic
The terms solar system and photovoltaic systems are often confused or used synonymously. However, we need to differentiate between the two. A solar system is often understood to be a system that generates electricity from solar energy. However, that is not quite right. Electricity generated from solar energy is only produced by a photovoltaic system. The (thermal) solar system uses the sun's energy to heat water, which is used for the pool, the heating system and/or domestic hot water.
The essential difference between solar thermal systems and photovoltaic systems can thus be explained in two simple sentences:
Solar thermal system: Generates hot water from solar energy, which can also be used for heating.
Photovoltaic system: Generates electricity from the energy of the sun.
